Wood Fence Maintenance Guide

Realistic care that keeps wood looking good

Wood fences do well here when they get light, regular attention. You do not need strict schedules or heavy products. A few smart habits keep boards healthy and lines straight.

What Matters Most In This Climate

Sun dries finishes, humidity swells boards, and sprinklers leave mineral marks. The cure is simple. Keep finish in good shape, let the base breathe, and keep water off the face where you can.

Simple Care That Works

  • Rinse and wipe when you see dust or sprinkler marks. A hose and soft brush are enough in most cases.

  • Trim vegetation so plants and vines do not rest on the boards. Keep mulch a few inches away so the base dries out after rain.

  • Aim sprinklers away from the fence. Hard water streaks fade finish faster than sun alone.

Shade, Soil and Sand

Shady spots hold moisture longer. Clear leaves and debris so air can move. Low areas that stay wet benefit from a small soil pullback at the base. Near the coast, salt is more of a concern for fasteners and hardware than for the wood itself. Stainless or powder-coated parts handle it well.

What To Avoid

Do not pressure wash close to the surface. It can raise the grain and strip finish unevenly. Do not apply bleach straight to wood. If you need a cleaner, use one labeled for exterior wood and rinse well.

After Heavy Weather

Once the yard dries, walk the fence line. Look for a leaning post or a board that moved. Check that caps are seated and gates swing cleanly. Catching small changes early prevents bigger work later.

When To Reseal or Restain

Watch how water behaves. If it stops beading and starts soaking in, it is time to refresh the finish. In open sun that is often every two to three years. In
deep shade or heavy overspray areas, sooner makes sense. Use exterior products rated for high UV exposure.

Gate Tuneups You Can Do

Gates see the most movement. If one drags or latches tight, check hinge bolts and the striker alignment. Small turns usually bring it back into line. If it still feels off, we can tune it.

When To Call Us

If a section feels loose, if a post looks like it shifted, or if a gate needs more than a small adjustment, reach out. Most fixes are fast when handled early, and our installers know these systems well.
